Sikh boy withdrawn from school in dispute of ceremonial dagger

A Sikh boy has been withdrawn from the Compton School in Barnet, north London, in a dispute over a ceremonial dagger, his local education authority confirmed.

(Published: 2:30PM BST 13 Oct 2009)

The 14-year-old who has not been named, was forbidden from wearing a five-inch (13cm) kirpan to school on the grounds that it was a health and safety risk.

The ceremonial sword, or dagger, is one of five articles of the Sikh faith that must be carried at all times.

The school governors said they had tried to reach a compromise and had proposed that he wore a two-inch version of the dagger welded into a sheath.

But this was rejected by his family who said the miniature dagger was not a genuine kirpan.

The boy first started carrying the five inch kirpan two years ago when he was baptised as a Sikh.

But according to his older brother Ravjeet Singh, he was no longer allowed to wear the dagger at the beginning of this term.

''He was greeted by the head teacher at the school and was asked if he was wearing the kirpan,'' he told the BBC's Asian Network.

''He said yes and then they said, 'We're going to have to turn you away'.''

The boy's family told the BBC he was now being privately educated having missed five weeks of school.

A statement from The Compton School board of governors said: ''The student involved is a valued pupil at the school who is expected to get good grades in his forthcoming GCSEs.

''The school's governing body has spent the past two years trying to reach an agreement with the family and to establish the appropriate nature of a religious artifact that can safely be brought into school.

''During this period of time, along with the local authority, we have examined potential compromises after looking at how this issue has been dealt with in other schools, education authorities and elsewhere within the Sikh community and taken legal advice.

''At the moment we are holding a place open for the student should he feel able to wear a kirpan suitable to bring into school.''

A message from KORESH says that he will not surrender until he has written a manuscript explaining the Seven Seals. At a meeting in SESSIONS's office on the tear gas plan, two military experts and the Army's Dr. Harry SALEM brief RENO, detailing what is known about its effect on children ("...although there had been no laboratory tests performed on children relative to the effects of the gas, anecdotal evidence was convincing that there would be no permanent injury"). CLARKE says the Davidians might be running out of water. RENO asks FBI to gather information about the compound's water supply and estimate how long the Davidians could hold out. FBI says rationing is to ensure discipline, and provisions would last a year. RENO meets with Delta Force commanders to review the tear gas plan. [Scruggs 107, 243, 266, 269, 270]

KORESH tells negotiators that he has completed the manuscript on the First Seal. RENO rejects the tear gas plan, according to what RICHARD says HUBBELL told him. SESSIONS, CLARKE, and POTTS hurry to HUBBELL's office, and SESSIONS asks to speak with RENO. Ten minutes later HUBBELL returns with RENO, who orders a written statement "describing the situation inside the compound, the progress of negotiations, and the merits" of the plan, plus supporting documentation for all factual assertions. BERLIN (AP) — The Berlin zoo doesn't plan to change security measures even after a polar bear attacked a woman who managed to jump into the bears' enclosure last week, an incident caught on video.

"It is already safe," zoo spokesman Heiner Kloes said Monday.

The woman, who has not been identified, climbed down a fence, over a wide hedge full of thorns and got past a concrete wall before swan diving into the murky moat where the polar bears swim.

One of four bears in the enclosure bit the woman's arms, legs and back before keepers rescued her out with a life preserver.

The woman was taken to Berlin's Charité hospital for treatment and is still recovering, the Bild newspaper reported Monday. The hospital did not return phone calls seeking comment.

It was not clear what made the woman circumvent all those security measures and jump in with four large, fully grown polar bears. Police did not provide any motive for the incident.

Last year, a man who said celebrity polar bear Knut looked "lonely" hurdled over a water-filled ditch into his enclosure at the same zoo. The 37-year-old emerged unscathed after keepers lured Knut away with a leg of beef.

An older bear attacked Friday's leaper.

Despite visitors' repeated attempts to hug the huge, powerful bears, keepers have no plans to change the zoo's setup. The concrete wall protecting the polar bears' enclosure will not be built up higher than its current three feet (90 centimeters), nor will more guards be posted, Kloes said.

"People who want to jump in will always find a way," he added.

This infamous Cult headed by Marshall Herff Applewhite is no longer around today. They all perished by assisted "suicide" on based on firm beliefs that they were leaving their "containers" and finding salvation via the Hale Bopp Commet. 21 women and 18 men voluntarily committed suicide in three groups on three successive days starting on 1997-MAR-23. Most were in their 40's; the rest covered an age range of 26 to 72. 1 Two months later, two additional members, Charles Humphrey and Wayne Cooke attempted suicide in a hotel room a few miles from the Rancho Santa Fe mansion; Cooke succeeded. Humphrey tried again in the Arizona desert during 1998-FEB and was successful. Overall, 41 members died.
Despite the absence of a core group, 2 members of Heaven's Gate who did not "leave" have been maintaining their web site at www.heavensgate.com and distributing materials and information that the group left behind. Seriously check out their web site! It's an exact replica of when the group exited planet Earth.
During the 1980's the group made over 500 audio tapes of their secluded classroom teachings. They also made 11 video tapes and wrote a large anthology of their teachings. The survivors have digitized over 200 hours of those audio tapes, and about 20 hours of Video material and stored the entire archive on three CD-ROM's. They feel it is important to offer this world a permanent record of this groups activities. If a group of people are going to choose to die together, it is best to have a master plan: proper burial outfits, packed suitcases, lists, farewell videotapes, even recipes for death. The ghastly jumble of bodies piled upon bodies discovered in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978 may have provided a stark lesson in how not to do it. That mass suicide was a disorderly, ungracious way to meet your maker, a study not in serenity but in chaos.

So last week, in that spacious Rancho Santa Fe mansion, with the bougainvillaea in full bloom outside, 39 bodies were laid out on their backs on bunk beds and mattresses, looking like so many laboratory specimens pinned neatly to a board. Each was dressed in black pants, flowing black shirt, spanking-new black Nikes. Their faces were hidden by purple cloths, shrouds the purple of Christian penance. Those who wore glasses had them neatly folded next to their body, and all, helpfully, had identification papers for the authorities to find. The house, more than one awed witness noted, was immaculate, tidier even than before the victims had moved in. It was as if, in preparing for their death, the members of what the world now knows as the Heaven's Gate cult were heeding the words of the prophet Isaiah: "Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live."

But though the victims may have believed their bodies were merely irrelevant "containers," to be left behind when they were whisked away by extraterrestrials, to the sheriff's deputies who first encountered them, the corpses were most certainly the real thing. The 21 women and 18 men, ranging in age from 26 to 72, were in varying stages of decomposition; the smell permeating the house was so putrid that two sickened officers went to the hospital to be sure they had not inhaled poisonous fumes. As the San Diego medical examiner reported, the cultists died in three groups: a first round of 15, then the next 15, then seven, all apparently by ingesting phenobarbital mixed with a bit of applesauce or pudding, kicked by a shot of vodka, then helped along by the asphyxiating effect of a plastic bag over the head. The final two men--the ultimate angels of death--had only bags, no shrouds. Alone in the master bedroom, his order in the march of death still unknown, was the master himself: 65-year-old Marshall Herff Applewhite.

Her defense attorney pointed out that "The dilemma she faced is a terrible one for a mother," Files told the jury. "Does she follow what she believes to be God's will, or does she turn her back on God?" Joshua, 8, and Luke, 6, died, while younger brother Aaron, 14 months old, suffered serious brain injury. Laney believed God had told her the world was going to end and "she had to get her house in order," which included killing her children, who would then shortly be resurrected.
The "deeply religious East Texas woman", a choir member, vocalist, and volunteer worker at the 250 member First Assembly of God in Tyler, who home-schooled her children in New Chapel Hill, wept when the prosecutors showed the courtroom the gruesome and graphic photographs of the bashed in skulls.
Deanna Laney said Luke was lying on his back, his head against a rock, as she stood over him and hammered a sandstone the size of a dinner plate into his skull several times. "He kept gurgling," she said. "He kept breathing and I knew he had to die. So I got this rock and I put it over his chest and I held it over his chest."

The FBI broadcasts a message to those in the compound over a loudspeaker, saying they will be treated fairly if they come out. [Scruggs 73]

In a purported attempt to address some of the Davidians' concerns, the FBI delivers to the compound legal documents, letters from KORESH's attorneys and other items. KORESH says he is ready to come out and face the music. Two Davidians, Brad BRANCH and Kevin WHITECLIFF, come out of the compound. [Scruggs 75]

The Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God

This Doomsday Cult was based in Uganda and founded in the late 80s by excommunicated Roman Catholic priests, Joseph Kibweteere, Joseph Kasapurari, John Kamagara and Dominic Kataribabo; two excommunicated Roman Catholic nuns; and Credonia Mwerinde, an ex-prostitute.

On March 15 2000, (two days before the church fire) a "farewell" letter was issued by Kibeteere to government officials. That letter spoke of the imminent end of the current generation and the world. Similar sentiments were expressed in a previous communication, which said "God sent us as a movement of truth and justice to notify the people to prepare for the closing of this generation, which is at hand." One official reflecting upon Kibwetere's last letter recalled, "The person who brought the letter bid farewell to the...staff. It was pre-meditated suicide."

At their height, the cult may have included as many as 5,000 members. The 68-year-old self-styled "bishop" was once a prominent Roman Catholic and active in Ugandan politics. In 1998 Kibwetere was hospitalized for treatment of a mental illness. "He had an affective disorder. A cyclical thing. Up and down. Like manic depress[ion]," advised Dr. Fred Kigozi, executive director of Kampala's Butabika mental hospital.

Kibwetere claimed to have visions and hear conversations between Jesus and the Virgin Mary. He said the Virgin Mary complained about the world's departure from the Ten Commandments. And subsequently, that he was commanded to announce a coming Apocalypse in the year 2000.

Kibwetere authored a handbook, which foretold a litany of coming calamities that would destroy most of the world's population. He said only those who obeyed the commandments and followed him might be spared within his church, which he called the "ark."

Joseph Kibwetere merged his leadership with a former prostitute named Credonia Mwerinde often called the "programmer." Some say Mwerinde, who claimed to have met the Virgin Mary, ultimately eclipsed the cult's founder in both real importance and power. Fr. Paul Ikazire, a priest and former cult member said she dominated the group and that "Kibwetere was just a figurehead." He characterized Mwerinde as "a trickster, obsessed with the desire to grab other people's property." The Virgin Mary as channeled through Mwerinde proscribed all the rules of the group.

Credonia Mwerinde preached that personal possessions were evil. She encouraged cult members to sell everything and surrender all their assets to her. Eventually Mwerinde became rich and accumulated farms, houses and cars. Paul Ikazire recalled, "She would come in and say things like: 'The Virgin Mary wants you to bring more money."'

Kibwetere and Mwerinde kept their followers isolated. Any contact with outsiders ("sinners") was strictly monitored and often forbidden. Cult members were predominately poor and former Catholics. They were encouraged to be celibate, sworn to a vow of silence and unable to speak unless in prayer. They often relied upon sign language.

The movement's members rose at dawn, prayed until noon and worked long hours in the fields before going to bed usually at 10 PM. Though newcomers were fed well the regular members largely subsisted on beans. They were hungry, tired, estranged from family and largely cut off from the outside world.

Doomsday predictions were made by the cult's leaders, but pushed forward again and again. Kibwetere's manifesto handbook had been mailed out by the thousands, which was titled "A Timely Message From Heaven: The End of the Present Time." The date for this final event was set for December 31, 2000. When that day passed as another unfulfilled prophecy it is believed that some disgruntled members wanted to leave and have their property returned.

OVERALL GLIMPSE:

On the 17th of March 2000, 530 bodies, of which at least 78 were children, were found to have burned alive in a church in a remote part of Uganda; all part of a Christian apolcalyptic group. 330 skulls were found, the rest had turned to ash. Over 1,000 bodies were found elsewhere in Uganda during the following days, many of which were found to have been strangled. The doors and locks were fastened from the inside, suggesting this was the final intention of the group's leader, not necessarily an outsider murdering them.

On March 24, two mass graves containing 153 bodies were found at a cult compound in Kalingo, 45 km to the west of Kanungu. Some had been dead for more than four months.

Days later, 155 bodies were discovered under a newly-cemented floor in the house of cult leader 'Father' Dominic Kataribabo in Rugazi, 80 km north of Kanungu.

Most of the victims were women and children, many with stab wounds or ropes around their necks. Others were poisoned.

There are many reasons that lead authorities to believe it was a MASS SUICIDE:

- There is one initial report, never unconfirmed, that the members had applied gasoline and paraffin to their skin before the explosion and fire. However, it is difficult to see how the observer could have witnessed these preparations if the windows and doors of the church were nailed shut. If confirmed, this would be one indicator that the deaths might have been the result of a mass suicide, similar to that of Heaven's Gate.
- The police investigation cast doubt on this sole witness; they found no signs of paraffin having been used at the church. Most of the world media initially emphasized the suicide theory. So did representatives of the anti-cult movement who are keen to promote their belief that mass suicide is a logical outcome of cult activity. They accuse cults of brainwashing their membership and reducing their will to act independently.
- Although their fundamental beliefs have been widely discounted by mental health professionals, the ACM has been quite successful in propagating their beliefs among the press and the rest of the public.

However, there are also many indications that the tragedy was actually MASS MURDER:

- Several news sources reported that the doors of the church were nailed shut from the inside. That might indicate that the leadership wanted to confine the full membership within the church in order to murder the entire group.
- The discovery of additional bodies which had been murdered and buried in latrines near the church gives weight to the mass murder theory.
- The discoveries of many hundreds of murder victims at other locations also point towards mass murder.
- Leader Kibwetere appears to have planned the tragedy in advance. He allegedly sent a letter to his wife before the tragedy, encouraging her to continue the religion "because the members of the cult were going to perish the next day.''
- The group's membership are almost entirely ex-Roman Catholic -- a faith that strongly forbids suicide. Traditional belief also very strongly forbids suicide. Finally, local belief is that if a person dies in a fire, that not only their body is killed but their soul is as well. This is the reason why evil sorcerers were once burned alive: so that they would be completely annihilated. It is very unlikely that if a person in this area wanted to commit suicide that they would choose death by fire."

If you don't know about these shoes you're sleeping. Not only are Wallabees mentioned dozens of times throughout NYC rap (specifically wu-tang), but their legendary style serves as an ideal and promising platform for many other labels to bite from. That's the way of fashion, ya got to bite others sometimes.
Clarks have been around since 1950, so they have a relentless status that no other street label can match. I don't care that Alife put out a mock-replica that resembles Clarks ("Kennedy" release 07/08) they were fresh releases by all means, despite their over-zealous $140+ price tag.

The fact is, it was a smart idea of Alife to clearly bite Clarks, given Alife's street-cult following. Other brands have clearly been inspired as well.
However, Clarks will remain atop of the pedestal no matter how many "slick" shoe brands break bank pushing their "limited edition" lines to the masses. Wallabees are classic, which means they can't be touched! I'm not a hater, i cop Alife when i can, but i also cop Clarks. Their style is simple but limitless. 50 years and they're still crushing! From Desert Boots to Wallabee-hi, Clarks tower above the rest.

Over the objections of some FBI negotiators, JAMAR orders all electricity to be cut off for good, because "he wanted those inside the compound to experience the same wet and cold night as the tactical personnel outside." The Davidians say the power shut-off is a "huge, huge setback," causing SCHNEIDER and others to change their minds about coming out. The justification for cutting the power is that it is going to be a very cold night and maximum effect would be gained in making the Davidians uncomfortable inside the compound. Also, cutting the power is designed to challenge KORESH's control of the situation and to raise the level of stress within the compound to force more departures. [Dennis 14]

Alabama: the day after!

SAMSON, Alabama -- Alina Knowles anxiously crept along her neighbor's porch, where the bodies lay strewn on the blood-covered floor.

And then she heard the baby's wail. The infant was covered in blood, but she was crying.

"I'm glad she was crying -- I knew she was alive," Knowles told CNN Wednesday, just a day after her neighbors were gunned down in the middle of a shooting spree over two south Alabama towns.

"There was blood everywhere, I couldn't tell where the bleeding was coming from," said Knowles, a certified nurse's assistant. "Her mother's blood was on her."

Just minutes before, Knowles had heard the rapid fire of gunshots from her home next door in the Samson neighborhood as 28-year-old Michael McLendon methodically shot dead five people, including two children, on the front porch of his uncle's home on West Pullum Street.

Among the dead were the wife and and toddler of Geneva County Sheriff's Deputy Josh Myers.

Knowles scooped up Myers' crying 3-month-old daughter and ducked behind a minivan as McLendon cruised down an adjacent street, still firing at people.

McLendon was "very workmanlike, like he was on a mission," Knowles said. "It really sounded like you were in a war zone."

The 28-year-old gunman would kill three more people, including his 74-year-old grandmother, before heading to Geneva, where he would ultimately take his own life in a standoff with police. Eleven people died in the rampage, which lasted less than an hour and started with the killing of his mother in neighboring Coffee County.

Knowles cleaned off the baby as she anxiously awaited an ambulance and authorities. She found a wound on the baby's leg.

"I was crying the whole time," she said, recalling that she scurried to a neighbor's brick home where she felt safe amid all the gunfire.

A mother of two, Knowles has since spoken to deputy Myers, who was involved in the shootout at the Reliable Metal Products plant a few miles away in Geneva before he even realized his wife, Andrea, and 1 1/2-year-old daughter, Corinne Gracy, were among McLendon's victims.

"He thanked me 'for saving my baby girl,' " Knowles said, dismissing any notion of being a hero, saying Myers would have done the same for her.

A day after Tuesday's shootings, Myers stood in front of his home, across the street from the house where his family members were killed, and spoke to reporters.

"It's supposed to be me out here getting shot, not my family," Myers said, speaking barely above a whisper.

Meanwhile, Knowles is haunted by the scene on the porch and misses her neighbors, whom she considered friends.

"All I can see is faces," she said. "It's going to take a while to shake that."

David Koresh was born Vernon Wayne Howell in Houston, Texas in 1959 to a 15-year old single mother. He never knew his father and was raised by his grandparents.
In his late night conversations with FBI agents during the siege, Koresh described his childhood as lonely. He said the other kids teased him and called him "Vernie." He was dyslexic, a bad student, and dropped out of high school. However, he had musical ability and a strong interest in the Bible. By 12, he had memorized large tracts of it.

When he was 20, Koresh turned to the Church of Seventh Day Adventists, his mother's church. But he was expelled for being a bad influence on the young people. Sometime during the next couple of years, Koresh went to Hollywood to become a rock star but nothing came of it. Instead, in 1981 he went to Waco, Texas where he joined the Branch Davidians, a religious sect which in 1935 had settled 10 miles outside of Waco. At one time, it had more than 1,400 members.

Koresh had an affair with then-prophetess Lois Roden who was in her late sixties. The two travelled to Israel together. When Lois Roden died, a power struggle began between Koresh and Lois Roden's son George. For a short time, Koresh retreated with his followers to eastern Texas. But in late 1987 he returned to Mount Carmel in camouflage with seven male followers, armed with five .223 caliber semiautomatic assault rifles, two .22 caliber rifles, two 12-gauge shotguns and nearly 400 rounds of ammunition. During the gunfight, Roden was shot in the chest and hands.

He and his followers went on trial for attempted murder. The seven were acquitted and a mistrial was declared in Koresh's case. (Koresh told the jury he and his men went to Mount Carmel to find evidence of corpse abuse by Roden and their shots were aimed at a tree.)

By 1990 Koresh had become the leader of the Branch Davidians and legally changed his name, saying on the court document that the change was "for publicity and business purposes." He said the switch arose from his belief that he was now head of the biblical House of David. (Koresh is a Hebrew transliteration of Cyrus, the name of the Persian king who allowed the Jews held captive in Babylon to return to Israel.)

SAMSON, Ala. – A gunman killed at least nine people on a terrifying rampage across two Alabama counties Tuesday, burning down his mother's home, killing members of his own family and shooting apparent strangers on their porches as he drove by, authorities said. He then fatally shot himself at a metals plant.

Police were investigating shootings in at least four different locations in three neighboring communities, all of which were believed to be the work of a single gunman who had not yet been identified by investigators. At least four other people, including a child, were injured.

The afternoon of bloodshed began in Kinston, near the Alabama-Florida border, where the shooter burned down his mother's house, according to Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers. Officials located the woman's body inside the house, but they had not been able to get inside the still-burning house to determine a cause of death or whether she was the 10th victim.

The gunman then headed about 12 miles southeast to the town of Samson, in Geneva County, where he shot and killed five people — four adults and a child — at a home. Then he killed one person each in two other homes. The identities of all the victims were unknown, but Preachers said they included other members of the shooter's family.

"He started in his mother's house," Preachers said. "Then he went to Samson and he killed his granny and granddaddy and aunt and uncle. He cleaned his family out."

"We don't know what triggered it," Preachers added.

The gunman also shot at a state trooper's car, striking the vehicle seven times and wounding the trooper with broken glass.

He then killed someone at a Samson supply store, and another person at a service station.

Samson contractor Greg McCullough said he was pumping gas at the station when the gunman opened fire, killing a woman coming out of the service station and wounding McCullough in the shoulder and arm with bullet fragments that struck his truck and the pump.

Early evening

DAVID KORESH: Is this death and hell a person? What is Christ revealed as, according to the fourth seal?

FBI NEGOTIATOR (JOHN): Pale -- a rider on a pale horse.

DAVID KORESH: And his name is what?

FBI NEGOTIATOR (JOHN): Death.

DAVID KORESH: Now, do you know what the name Koresh means?

JOHN: Go ahead.

DAVID KORESH: It means death. You see, the name of God is Yahweh, but the way it's actually pronounced since the first punctuation of time from the ancient writers, is when it says in the Tenach, thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, it means thou shall not take his name. His name is Yahweh. And the way it's pronounced is like this. (Breathing in and out). Every time you breathe you're saying the name of God. That's why in Judaism and stuff they never, they never pronounce it according to the word from Yahweh. You fix it --

JOHN: Um-hum.

DAVID KORESH: Okay. So everyone who breathes is taking God's name and if we live without knowing his testimony or his word, we're living in vanity. And we're taking his name in vain. Some people say, well, when I say goddam, that's taking the Lord's name in vain, Well, now, wait a minute. Let's break this down. Does God condemn -- damn means to condemn. Well, no one has the right to tell God to condemn anybody, do they? Do they?

JOHN: No.

DAVID KORESH: No. But God or Got (phonetic sp.), the German word GOT, you know, is another word from another country, you know. There's no such word in the Hebrew, God. There's the word, the Adonai, which means Lord, but the actual proper names of, of the sovereignty of Heaven is Yahweh, El Shaddai, and then what? That's it. Off the manuscript. Yahweh and El Shaddai. But, according to the prophecies, God proclaims to Deuteronomy that he will publish his name somewhere.

So when it talks about Koresh, it's a surname. A surname for God. Now, you get the concordances and the dictionaries out and you'll find out that they'll tell you it's from an unused root word that they don't know what the meaning is. No scholar, no teacher, no concordance in this whole world can tell you what the name Koresh means. They don't know. It's kind of weird, isn't it?

JOHN: No, but you've told me it means death.

DAVID KORESH: Wait a second.

JOHN: Right?

DAVID KORESH: Revelation says Christ has a name that no one knows but he, himself. And his name is the word of God. Okay. Now, if it's true that the proper name of God is Yahweh, which is (Breathing in and out). When you breathe you go Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh. Okay? What do you do when you die? What's the sound your body makes when you die?

JOHN: It doesn't make any sound when you die.

DAVID KORESH: Yes it does.

JOHN: No it doesn't.

DAVID KORESH: Yes it does. You don't know what you're talking about.

JOHN: Your last dying breath? Is that what you want?

DAVID KORESH: Yeah. What does your body do?

JOHN: Rattle.

DAVID KORESH: --nation or power that's going to overrule what God wants.

Witch Hunters of Indonesia

- Indonesian Witch Hunters: Since September, 1998, more than 153 people have been murdered in East Java by groups of men clad in black wearing Ninja-style masks. The victims have been mostly Muslim clerics, black magicians and other people accused of sorcery.

The killers have struck against the sorcerers at night, cutting their throats and sometimes hanging their mutilated bodies in trees or tossing them in the street. Victims sometimes have been cut into small pieces and their body parts thrown into mosques.

Shocked by the mysterious murders, Indonesia's justice minister proposed outlawing black magic. In scenes reminiscent of the Salem witch hunts, mobs have also attacked and killed people suspected of being black magicians. Police have arrested more than 100 suspects, but acknowledge there's no clear motive for the grisly slayings.

-Witch Killers in Congo: (800 deep) Since June 15, 2001, over 800 suspected witches were hacked to death in villages in rebel-held northeastern Congo. "Villagers were saying that some people had bewitched others, and they started lynching them. By the time we discovered this, 60 people had already been killed by early last week. About 200 people lost their lives," Brig. Henry Tumukunde said.

Ugandan troops -- who had been in northeastern Congo since 1998 in support of a rebellion against the Congolese government but had been evacuated earlier in the year -- were sent back to the area to stop the killings. The killings began in Aru, 50 miles south of Sudan on the Ugandan border, but have quickly spread throughout northeastern Congo. Diseases and other troubles endemic to the region were being blamed on witchcraft which in turn led to the rampaging violence.

-THERE'S MORE: According to The New Foreign Policy Magazine, in Paupa New Guinea, where the AIDS crisis has been increasing significantly, there is a surge in clashes between victims and those still relying on traditional folklore. AIDS deaths are often attributed to witchcraft and followed by brutal retribution against those deemed responsible (usually women). The government is trying to devise a comprehensive approach to the disease, but it will have to contend with deep-grained beliefs, like this matter-of-fact justification by a farmer who killed his neighbors:

"We ran after them and we chopped their heads off with an axe and a bush knife. I felt sorry for them but they were witches, they deserved to die. If they were still alive they could hurt people with their magic." (source-http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/)

Before lopping off her head, witnesses said, the crowd gouged out her eyes and severed some of her limbs, which they tossed into the street.

Beheadings of suspected witches are not uncommon in rural towns and villages of Java, Indonesia's most populous and perhaps most mystical island. The local police estimate that there were at least 100 witch killings in Java last year. Still, few people seemed upset by the killings, which typically occur in Indonesia's backwaters and are committed under the guise of wiping out evil.

Negotiators jawbone for 11 hours with various Davidians, including 7 hours and 38 minutes with KORESH. The negotiators remain "calm and conciliatory." A memo written by Pete SMERICK and Mark YOUNG, two FBI psychological profilers, says a strategy of negotiations, coupled with ever increasing tactical presence, could be counter-productive and result in the loss of life.

-FRIDAY, MARCH 5:

Nine-year-old Heather JONES leaves compound wearing a note pinned to her jacket on which her mother says that, once the children are out, the adults will die. KORESH and his top aide, Steve SCHNEIDER, deny they are contemplating suicide. The FBI seeks the advice of experts and Davidians on likelihood of mass suicide by the Davidians and receives "inconsistent information." The FBI concludes that the Davidians have a one-year supply of food, including abundant military rations or MREs (meals ready to eat). KORESH continues preaching and threatening violence. [ Scruggs 49-52]

-SATURDAY, MARCH 6:

In an early morning conversation SCHNEIDER suggests federal agents might burn the compound down to destroy evidence. KORESH and SCHNEIDER are both "highly agitated and upset" for most of the day. The FBI becomes concerned that the negotiations are at an impasse and acknowledges "frustration in attempting to negotiate with KORESH." [ Scruggs 52-55]

-SUNDAY, MARCH 7:

Talks with KORESH and others inside the compound go round in circles. The FBI refuses to deliver milk for the children unless more of them are released. KORESH says all the children left in the compound are his biological descendants. A memo by SMERICK and YOUNG advises against tactical options in favor of establishing trust with KORESH. They predict the assault on the compound and say mass suicide is a possibility. GERSON talks SESSIONS out of going to Waco to negotiate directly with KORESH. [ Scruggs 57, 58, 181, 240]

In a conciliatory gesture, the FBI intervenes to have murder charges dropped against two elderly women, Davidians who had left the compound on March 2. Speaking with negotiators, KORESH accounts for his failure to surrender, as agreed, by saying he's "dealing now with his Father" and not with "your bureaucratic system of government." And he delivers various rambling sermons, focusing on such Biblical matters as "unlocking" the Seven Seals and interpreting God's intentions about the end of the world. In a late-evening conversation, he bristles at the movement of armored vehicles around the compound and says the FBI would have to "look at some of the pictures of the little ones that ended up perishing."

The movement claims to have about 40,000 members in several countries, although the number is difficult to verify.
The sect, which believes humans were created by extra-terrestrial beings who had mastered genetic engineering, was founded in France in 1973 by a former journalist who worked for a racing car magazine.

Prior to Clonaid, most media coverage of the Raëlians focused on the group's sexual beliefs and practices. While the Raëlians contend that they are wrongly presented in the press as a "sex cult," they seem to simultaneously invite and dismiss the reputation. In an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Raël denies that the group is centered on eroticism, then boasts that a 65-year-old Catholic nun "discovered sexual pleasure in her tent with a boyfriend" at a Raëlian retreat. Raël also enjoys posing for photographs with his nubile, topless disciples. The group's literature features pictures of nude women who appear to be in the midst of ogasmic throes.

Raël details the origins of his free-love philosophy in his book. After meeting his fellow prophets on the Elohim Planet, a robot showed Raël to his room and asked him if he wanted a female companion. When Raël answered in the affirmative, he was presented with a beautiful, brunet, biological sex robot. Then a blonde appeared, followed by a redhead, a "magnificent black woman," a "very fine, slender Chinese female," and finally another Asian woman, this one voluptuous. Because Raël could not decide which of the beautiful robots to bed, the Elohim allowed him to take all six. "I had the most unforgettable bath that I had ever had in the company of those charming robots, totally submissive to all my desires," recalls Raël.

Raël foresees a day when all humans will be able to have sex with robots. "Of course, the feminists will not like it," says Raël. "But nobody has any feelings against using a washing machine or a dishwasher." Raël says that while there is much sex among the movement's members, freedom of sexuality also includes the freedom not to have sex.

Raëlians are programmed not to be jealous. They are taught that, if they are truly happy with themselves, they will want their partner to be happy, and if happiness means the partner must sleep around, the partner should be allowed to do so.

While Raël copulates with many of his female followers, the ewes in his flock are not required to perform sex acts on their messiah. "I am getting old," says Raël. "I am less attractive than before. I'm 54 now. There are a lot of young men in the movement who are very beautiful."

Every July, hundreds of Raëlians meet in Quebec, where the group owns land. The gathering puts Raël's free-love theories into practice. "It is a one-week seminar," says Raël. "We teach everything about the Message and being happy. There is a 24-hour fast to cleanse the body and the mind, a lot of parties, many shows and people just happy together. There are a lot of beautiful women naked. The rest of the time, people enjoy swimming in the lake."

The classes include sensual massage and coed painting sessions, where devotees rub paint on each other's naked bodies. Between teachings, the Raëlians play nude volleyball.

"I was in an exclusive relationship when I became a Raëlian," says Florence, a Frenchwoman who presently resides in San Francisco. "I started a new life. I was not the same Florence that I had been even a few months earlier, and then I discovered I was bisexual."

On the Canadian property, Raël's condo is connected to UFOland. The small theme park is basically a building that houses a replica of the spaceship that transported Raël (which some members insist is a working model) and a 26-foot sculpture of the human DNA structure.

Raël moved from his native France to Quebec to escape what he says is religious persecution at the hands of the French government. "They try to make rumors about pedophilia, which we are against. We are for sexual freedom for adults only. Any time you are in favor of sexual freedom, people try to say you favor pedophilia."

While Raël opposes pedophilia, ten years ago he married the 16-year-old daughter of one of his disciples. "She was less than 18 when I met her, and I did not want to go to jail; so we got married," says Rael. "When she reached the legal age, we divorced, because we are against marriage."

Married or not, the couple enjoys an open relationship. Or, at least, Raël enjoys the relationship's openness. "She is not a very sexual person; so she is very happy if I can find what she does not enjoy so much with other people. She's happy with once a week, and I need more; so I find it somewhere else."

Although Raëlians believe that the human race was created on April 1, the Raëlian calendar begins on August 6, 1945, the day that the United States bombed Hiroshima. Cardigan Craze of 09

Seriously, Cardigans are no longer being rocked by Kanye West and hipsters (who wear extra-small sizes) anymore, there is a significant CARDIGAN CRAZE taking place! I'm noticing many more clothing lines aside from the overrated and overpriced WESC are releasing these treats to feast on. Crooks and Castles, Orisue, Obey, Perks & Mini, LRG, etc etc are on the cardigan bandwagon...don't get me wrong, i'm feeling a few, but not for prices that start @ $70 and work their way up toward $200.
These companies remind me of what was taking place almost 2 years ago when plaid/flannel hit the fan and every fashion label boosted design after design, color after color like junkies, in order to prey upon the public's desire to pay large amounts of cash for trends.
It's still in effect, especially in Portland and Seattle, but both these cities have been swapping these wool threads since before the dawn of grunge...Portland was a lumberjack-infested city back in the day! The northwest = flannel!
As a consumer, i try my best not to fumble into this category of trends although, which is why i only own ONE cardigan that cost me $7. Besides, i can't afford to stay up on every fashion trend or care to for that matter.
My flannel collection however has notably increased...and will continue despite any fluctuations on the plaid scene. I've been wearing red and black Pendaltons since age 15. 13 years later, and i'm still wearing that exact one!
Anyway, go buy cardigans, i can't afford them, so i buy flannels and squeeze them onto my coat rack which displays; greens, teals, reds, greys, blues, blacks, blah blah blah.

Gang-related shootings between December and January:

Dec. 12: 3725 N. Gantenbein Ave. Darshawn Cross, 31, a member of the Unthank Park Hustlers, is shot and killed during a funeral service at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Latwan Brown, 30, a member of the rival Kerby Blocc Crips, has been arrested in the case.

Dec. 13: Northeast Dekum and 18th: Shots fired, bullet holes found in two vehicles. A handgun and shell casings recovered.

Dec. 14: Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. and Lombard: Man shot in the leg after a confrontation with three men who accused him of belonging to a gang.

Dec. 15: Northeast Killingsworth and 60th: Man shot in both legs by a gunman firing from a passing vehicle.

Dec. 18: 6000 block of Northeast Simpson: Foster brother of church shooting suspect is shot twice in the legs by a gunman firing from a passing vehicle.

Dec. 19: Lloyd Center: A Crips gang member grazed by a bullet on Northeast Multnomah Street, just east of 11th Avenue near the Macy's parking lot after an encounter with gang rivals inside the mall.

Dec. 26: Lloyd Center Cinema: Reports of one man chasing another and shots being fired. No victim located.

Dec. 27: 5100 block of Northeast 42nd Avenue. Police investigate the shooting of a man who showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand, but he wouldn't cooperate with investigators.

Dec. 31: 200 block of Southeast 188th Avenue, Gresham. Report of shots fired leads to the discovery of two bodies near the Barberry Village Apartments: Darius Perry and Willy Butler, both 18. Raymond Lawrence, 17, has been accused of murder. Investigators suspect Butler fatally shot Perry, and then Lawrence shot and killed Butler. Butler was a half brother to murder suspect Latwan Brown, 30, who is accused of the killing at the Dec. 12 funeral.

Jan. 1: Southeast 122nd Avenue and Foster Road. Callers report hearing five gunshots. Police find two women who were shot at in a car which showed damage. Witnesses said the women were being pursued by two men in a second car.

Jan. 8: 4200 block of North Commercial. Numerous bullets fired into a house.

Recently there have been multiple gang-related murders and shootings plaguing the Vancouver, BC metro area. According to sources, there have been 11 homicides in Metro Vancouver since 09. In fact, February brought a reign of terror in the streets with 6 shootings taking place in 6 days resulting in 4 deaths. All together, February has brought about 18 shootings total in BC!

The following is an exert from BC news reports on events between Feb. 2 and Feb. 8th:

The carnage began when James Erickson, 25, was found murdered in an apartment in the Whalley neighbourhood in Surrey. Erickson is well known to police.

On Feb 3. Raphael Baldini was shot to death as he sat in a luxury SUV outside a Surrey mall. The 21-year-old held the lease on a Surrey apartment where six people -- two of them innocent bystanders -- were killed in October 2007.

The same day Baldini was killed, Brianna Kinnear, 21, who had escaped from jail while serving time for drug trafficking, was found shot to death in a car in suburban Coquitlam.

Then on Friday, 26-year-old Kevin Robert LeClair was shot in his truck at a grocery store in Langley. He died from his injuries this weekend.

On Sunday outside a grocery store near West Broadway and Arbutus St. in Vancouver's west side another shooting take place. The suspect fled on foot and at least one report suggests the victim has gang ties.

-On Feb. 22, hundreds of citizens took to the streets of Vancouver in protesting the gang violence hoping to also push the government to enforce stricter laws. Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently announced a plan to crack down on an unprecedented wave of gang-related murders as the city prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Canada's public safety minister even called the gang violence the worst in the country, and British Columbia this week appointed an organized crime czar to oversee gang, drug and gun violence issues.

The shootings have taken place in Kitsalano (yuppy-land), Langley, Surrey, and downtown Vancouver.

16 yrs ago, the WACO Siege had begun by ATF agents on David Koresh's compound, the Branch Davidian aka Students of the Seven Seals. This sect had originally been apart of the Shepherd's Rod founded by Victor Houteff who had broke away from the Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) due to difference of beliefs. Houteff also founded the Mt. Carmel Center in Waco Texas.
Background:
After Houteff died, control of the Davidians passed to his wife Florence. She moved the community to a new location farther from Waco. She prophesied that the 1260 days mentioned in Revelation 11:3 would end and the Kingdom of David would be established on 1959-APR-22. Many hundreds of followers sold their possessions and moved to Mt. Carmel in anticipation of the "end time". They were bitterly disappointed when April 23 dawned and it was business as usual around the world. The group almost did not survive the failure of the prophecy; only a few dozen members remained. Many had left to form the Davidian Seventh-Day Adventist Association which remains active to this day. Florence Houteff left in 1962.

Benjamin Roden assumed control of the group, and renamed it the General Association of Davidian Seventh-Day Adventists. He proclaimed himself to be King David's successor. After his death in 1978, his wife, Lois Roden took control. She had been receiving visions that God is both male and female, that the third person of the trinity (the Holy Spirit) was female, and that Christ would take the form of a woman at his/her second coming! A power struggle developed between Lois and her son George.

Vernon Howell aka David Koresh (1959-1993) joined the group as a handyman in 1981. In 1984, he married the daughter of a prominent member of the community, Rachel Jones, then aged 14. A series of power struggles resulted. George Roden had Howell thrown off the property. Roden later dug up a 25 year old corpse, placed it in the chapel and declared that the person who returned the corpse to life would be the next leader. Howell and followers sneaked into the compound to photograph the casket. They were detected and a gun battle between Vernon and George Roden resulted; George was wounded, and later imprisoned for violating a restraining order and for contempt of court. The latter charge was caused by a series of legal actions that he filed which were filled with profanity and threats against the judges. When Roden was imprisoned in 1987, Howell and his followers took over control. They found an illegal drug laboratory on the premises which made met amphetamine; they also found a large quantity of pornography. Both were removed. Howell was later tried for attempted murder, but the jury could not reach a verdict.

In 1989, Roden split his roommate's head open with an axe; he was found not-guilty of murder by reason of insanity. He lived in the Big Spring State Hospital in west Texas state mental facility. (On 1998-DEC-5, at the age of 60, he escaped and was found dead of a heart attack on the hospital grounds.)

A major international recruitment drive was established in 1985; it was aimed at SDA members (in particular those who had been disfellowshipped from the church due to their beliefs). This effort brought in members from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, etc. A number of businesses were created within the compound; guns were purchased wholesale and legally resold at gun shows. There were 130 members living at Waco in the Spring of 1993; they were a multi-racial, multi-ethnic group of whom 45 were black.

The group called themselves "Students of the Seven Seals" (meaning in reality: students of the scroll protected by the seven seals). The term "Branch Davidians" (BD) was derived from Roden's expression "Get off the dead [Shepherd's] Rod and move onto a living Branch". It was not generally used by the membership, but became the name most commonly used by the public and media. In 1990 Howell changed his name to David (after King David of the Israelites) Koresh (after the Babylonian King Cyrus). In 1992, Koresh renamed Mt. Carmel "Ranch Apocalypse", because of his belief that the final, encompassing battle of Armageddon mentioned in the Bible would start at the BD compound.

Despite that their beliefs were originally grounded in SDA, Koresh along with his followers created specific concepts to their group:
-God has provided a prophet whose pronouncements are to be regarded on a par with the Bible.
-Christ's death on the cross provided salvation only for those who died before 32 CE. People who have died since will only be saved through the activities of the current BD prophet.
-They believe that the "lamb" mentioned in Revelation 5:2 is not Jesus Christ (as essentially all Christians believe) but is David Koresh himself. The lamb is to open up the seven seals and trigger the sequence which ends the world as we know it. This belief caused a great deal of misunderstanding; many Christians believe that Koresh viewed himself as Jesus Christ, and was thus psychotic.
-After the breaking of the seals, Christ would return to earth. A battle would occur in which the BDs would play a major role. The BD members alone would ascend to heaven to be with God.
-Massive confusion developed within the BD during the standoff. Koresh apparently believed that the BATF raid was in some way related to the Book of Revelation's Apocalypse and the war of Armageddon. However details did not fit. Koresh taught that it would occur in Jerusalem in 1995, not in Texas during 1993.

-SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1993:

At about 9:30 a.m. agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms attempt to execute arrest and search warrants against David KORESH and the Branch Davidian compound. Gunfire erupts. Four ATF agents are killed and 16 are wounded. An undetermined number of Davidians are killed and injured. Within a few hours, the FBI becomes the lead agency for resolving the standoff. Jeff JAMAR is named the on-site commander. By the afternoon, advance units of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) arrive, and telephone conversations are under way between KORESH, Steve SCHNEIDER, and Wayne MARTIN on one side and the ATF's Jim CAVANAUGH and Waco Police Lt. Larry LYNCH on the other. KORESH discloses that he has been wounded in the hip and left wrist. KORESH is allowed to broadcast his religious teachings on Dallas radio KRLD and does a CNN telephone interview. Michael SCHROEDER, a Branch Davidian, is killed while he tries to return to the main building. Texas Rangers begin an investigation but are barred by the FBI from continuing. At about 5:30 p.m., JAMAR arrives at Waco and chooses Byron SAGE of the FBI as chief negotiator. President CLINTON follows events closely throughout the day.[ Scruggs 1, 9, 21, 22, 24, 229, 236, 241]

-MONDAY, MARCH 1:

In the early morning, Acting Attorney General Stuart GERSON gives an update to CLINTON, who implicitly endorses a negotiated solution and asks to be advised if there is any change in strategy. Larry POTTS at FBI headquarters in Washington and JAMAR in Waco are in command. Negotiations continue, and over the course of the day, 10 children are sent out of the compound. By 5 p.m., the FBI takes control with a fully functioning command post. FBI agents in armored vehicles deploy to the compound's perimeter. KORESH becomes extremely agitated when the armored vehicles move closer and when his phone line is cut except for outgoing calls to the negotiators. At least twice, KORESH says suicide is not being contemplated. CLINTON and FBI Director William SESSIONS talk about how to handle crisis. SESSIONS favors "waiting strategy," and CLINTON approves this tactic. [ Scruggs 9, 27, 28, 29, 30, 126, 237]

-TUESDAY, MARCH 2:

Into the wee hours the negotiations continue. In the early morning, KORESH makes a one-hour audio tape of his religious teachings, adding a preamble promising to surrender upon the national broadcast of tape. At 1:30 p.m., the tape is broadcast over the Christian Broadcasting Network. At 5:58 p.m, the word is relayed to negotiations from KORESH that God had spoken to him and had told him to wait. I recently paid a visit here where they happen to make their own personal ice cream and even their own waffle cones...fuckin' waffle cones, straight from the iron into thy hand with warmth!
Not only do they serve up fresh ice cream flavors like: Horchata, Mexican Chocolate, Licorice, or Cardamom Rose, but they own 6 pinball games featuring my favorite - Twilight Zone as well as Jacks to Open, No Good Gofers, FUNHOUSE, Mr & Mrs Pac Man, Ready, Aim, Fire, Sinbad; and even some classic arcade games like Tron.

They even promote local bands, comic book artists and graffiti artists. Bands play weekly, comic books are available for sale and graff writers hang their art.
I happened to be in luck last Saturday evening with being graced by some deliverence-style-cloddhopper band in full swing, followed by a live hiphop band.
Next door happens to be Seattle's Premiere Latino Dance Club, Revolucion. What more can you ask for...booze i assume, well, you're in luck, because they provide such fluid to feast upon while tilting pinball games and lapping up ice cream.

Q-Lazzarus is divine

-i discovered this artist last week by a couple of BC homies that insisted i hear the track, "Goodbye Horses". I was immediately struck with overwhelming 80s dance fervor that i secretly contained in my gut while they danced their asses off like it was a daily routine. (Thankyou Jaq & company!!)
Since then, i have obsessed over the one-hit-wonder track written & performed by William Garvey & sung by the female vocalist Q-Lazzarus.
This little 88' treasure is rare as fuck. Two of the infamous record-digging-stores in PDX never even heard of the gem. The 12inch is going for bundles of bennies online....i guess i won't be obtaining it anytime soon & neither will any other broke-ass djs!

CPJ's 2008 prison census: Online and in jail
New York, December 4, 2008--Reflecting the rising influence of online reporting and commentary, more Internet journalists are jailed worldwide today than journalists working in any other medium. In its annual census of imprisoned journalists, released today, the Committee to Protect Journalists found that 45 percent of all media workers jailed worldwide are bloggers, Web-based reporters, or online editors. Online journalists represent the largest professional category for the first time in CPJ's prison census.

CPJ's survey found 125 journalists in all behind bars on December 1, a decrease of two from the 2007 tally. (Read detailed accounts of each imprisoned journalist.) China continued to be world's worst jailer of journalists, a dishonor it has held for 10 consecutive years. Cuba, Burma, Eritrea, and Uzbekistan round out the top five jailers from among the 29 nations that imprison journalists. Each of the top five nations has persistently placed among the world's worst in detaining journalists.

At least 56 online journalists are jailed worldwide, according to CPJ's census, a tally that surpasses the number of print journalists for the first time. The number of imprisoned online journalists has steadily increased since CPJ recorded the first jailed Internet writer in its 1997 census. Print reporters, editors, and photographers make up the next largest professional category, with 53 cases in 2008. Television and radio journalists and documentary filmmakers constitute the rest.

"Online journalism has changed the media landscape and the way we communicate with each other," said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon. "But the power and influence of this new generation of online journalists has captured the attention of repressive governments around the world, and they have accelerated their counterattack."

In October, CPJ joined with Internet companies, investors, and human rights groups to combat government repression of online expression. After two years of negotiations, this diverse group announced the creation of the Global Network Initiative, which establishes guidelines enabling Internet and telecommunications companies to protect free expression and privacy online. Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft have joined the initiative.

Illustrating the evolving media landscape, the increase in online-related jailings has been accompanied by a rise in imprisonments of freelance journalists. Forty-five of the journalists on CPJ's census are freelancers; most of them work online. These freelancers are not employees of media companies and often do not have the legal resources or political connections that might help them gain their freedom. The number of imprisoned freelancers has risen more than 40 percent in the last two years, according to CPJ research.

"The image of the solitary blogger working at home in pajamas may be appealing, but when the knock comes on the door they are alone and vulnerable," said CPJ's Simon. "All of us must stand up for their rights--from Internet companies to journalists and press freedom groups. The future of journalism is online and we are now in a battle with the enemies of press freedom who are using imprisonment to define the limits of public discourse."

Antistate allegations such as subversion, divulging state secrets, and acting against national interests are the most common charge used to imprison journalists worldwide, CPJ found. About 59 percent of journalists in the census are jailed under these charges, many of them by the Chinese and Cuban governments.

About 13 percent of jailed journalists face no formal charge at all. The tactic is used by countries as diverse as Eritrea, Israel, Iran, the United States, and Uzbekistan, where journalists are being held in open-ended detentions without due process. At least 16 journalists worldwide are being held in secret locations. Among them is Gambian journalist "Chief" Ebrima Manneh, whose whereabouts, legal status, and health have been kept secret since his arrest in July 2006. From the U.S. Senate to the West African human rights court, international observers have called on authorities to free Manneh, who was jailed for trying to publish a critical report about Gambian President Yahya Jammeh.

Nowhere is the ascendance of Internet journalism more evident than in China, where 24 of 28 jailed journalists worked online. China's prison list includes Hu Jia, a prominent human rights activist and blogger, who is serving a prison term of three and a half years for online commentaries and media interviews in which he criticized the Communist Party. He was convicted of "incitement to subvert state power," a charge commonly used by authorities in China to jail critical writers. At least 22 journalists are jailed in China on this and other vague antistate charges.

Cuba, the world's second worst jailer, released two imprisoned journalists during the year after negotiations with Spain. Madrid, which resumed cooperative programs with Cuba in February, has sought the release of imprisoned writers and dissidents in talks with Havana. But Cuba continued to hold 21 writers and editors in prison as of December 1, all but one of them swept up in Fidel Castro's massive 2003 crackdown on the independent press. In November, CPJ honored Héctor Maseda Gutiérrez, who at 65 is the oldest of those jailed in Cuba, with an International Press Freedom Award.

Burma, the third worst jailer, is holding 14 journalists. Five were arrested while trying to spread news and images from areas devastated by Cyclone Nargis. The blogger and comedian Maung Thura, who uses the professional name Zarganar, was sentenced to a total of 59 years in prison during closed proceedings in November. Authorities accused Maung Thura of illegally disseminating video footage of relief efforts in hard-hit areas, communicating with exiled dissidents, and causing public alarm in comments to foreign media.

Eritrea, with 13 journalists in prison, is the fourth worst jailer. Eritrean authorities have refused to disclose the whereabouts, legal status, or health of any of the journalists they have imprisoned. Unconfirmed online reports have said that three of the jailed journalists may have died in custody, but the government has refused to even say whether the detainees are alive or dead.

Uzbekistan, with six journalists detained, is the fifth worst jailer. Those in custody include Dzhamshid Karimov, nephew of the country's president. A reporter for independent news Web sites, Karimov has been forcibly held in a psychiatric hospital since 2006.

Here are other trends and details that emerged in CPJ's analysis:

* In about 11 percent of cases, governments have used a variety of charges unrelated to journalism to retaliate against critical writers, editors, and photojournalists. Such charges range from regulatory violations to drug possession. In the cases included in this census, CPJ has determined that the charges were most likely lodged in reprisal for the journalist's work.

* Violations of censorship rules, the next most common charge, are applied in about 10 percent of cases. Criminal defamation charges are filed in about 7 percent of cases, while charges of ethnic or religious insult are lodged in another 4 percent. Two journalists are jailed for filing what authorities consider to be "false" news. (More than one type of charge may apply in individual cases.

* Print and Internet journalists make up the bulk of the census. Television journalists compose the next largest professional category, accounting for 6 percent of cases. Radio journalists account for 4 percent, and documentary filmmakers 3 percent.

* The 2008 tally reflects the second consecutive decline in the total number of jailed journalists. That said, the 2008 figure is roughly consistent with census results in each year since 2000. CPJ research shows that imprisonments rose significantly in 2001, after governments imposed sweeping national security laws in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Imprisonments stood at 81 in 2000 but have since averaged 128 in CPJ's annual surveys.

* The United States, which is holding photographer Ibrahim Jassam without charge in Iraq, has made CPJ's list of countries jailing journalists for the fifth consecutive year. During this period, U.S. military authorities have jailed dozens of journalists in Iraq--some for days, others for months at a time--without charge or due process. No charges have ever been substantiated in these cases.

CPJ does not apply a rigid definition of online journalism, but it carefully evaluates the work of bloggers and online writers to determine whether the content is journalistic in nature. In general, CPJ looks to see whether the content is reportorial or fact-based commentary. In a repressive society where the traditional media is restricted, CPJ takes an inclusive approach to work that is produced online.

The organization believes that journalists should not be imprisoned for doing their jobs. CPJ has sent letters expressing its serious concerns to each country that has imprisoned a journalist.

CPJ's list is a snapshot of those incarcerated at midnight on December 1, 2008. It does not include the many journalists imprisoned and released throughout the year; accounts of those cases can be found at www.cpj.org. Journalists remain on CPJ's list until the organization determines with reasonable certainty that they have been released or have died in custody.

Journalists who either disappear or are abducted by nonstate entities, including criminal gangs, rebels, or militant groups, are not included on the imprisoned list. Their cases are classified as "missing" or "abducted."

Ol' Dirty fuckin' Bastard!!

I wrote an obituary for ODB a couple weeks after his death in 04 when i was a young naive inexperienced A&E Editor for my jr college newspaper "The Clipper".
Here it is copied from paper to computer for YOU. (keep in mind, this was written 4 yrs ago)

Ol' Dirty died November 13 at the age of 35. This may be old news to the majority, but his legacy wasn't captured in the last issue of The Clipper. the man, the myth, the reality, who was also known as Dirt McGirt, Big Baby Jesus in the Wu-Tang video game for his drunken fighting style and by his legal name, Russell Jones.

He was the maniacal rapper who didn't worry about offending anyone. There were no boundaries that limited his unfortunate existence. His thoughts and actions were blatantly strewn throughout his albums, guest appearances and notably witnessed at the Grammy's when he crashed the stage and grabbed the mic from Puff Daddy, shouting, "Puffy is great, but Wu-Tang is for the children."

The impulsive act was burned into the minds of many. In fact, the antic was a blessing to the hiphop scene. His infamous personality overwhelmed the faint at heart, and his madness welcomed tragedy after tragedy. Ol' Dirty was in-your-face aggressive while being real and honest. Unlike today's rappers, he walked the talk. The man contracted gonorrhea twice and had over 10 children with numerous women while not seeming ashamed. He let the world in on his crack addiction that consumed his entire integrity. Ol' Dirty is most notorious for his debut album of '95 that sparked national eminence, Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version. This release was bangin' (still is) at the time, along with prior crewmate releases by the GZA, Meth, and a simultaneous release by Raekwon, which led to the unveiling of Ghostface's Ironman release.

These releases only ranked Wu-Tang as a spectacular force of street credibility. They were the most prominent albums that dominated the rap genre in the mid-nineties, thanks to the revolutionary '93 Wu-Tang Clan debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). It was this specific album that caused mass Wu-Tang hysteria, spawned classic record debuts and generated a cult following that seemed as giant and significant to fans as Beattle mania.

Ol' Dirty never lost his ghetto mentality throughout his fame. Fortune only aided in his recklessness. Unfortunately his dysfunctional lifestyle never ceased, and run-ins with the law were a common episode. Through thick and thin, he managed somewhat, even showing his face while on the run from the law at a Wu-Tang publicized appearance. That's ghetto fabulous!
Bold enough (and high enough) to pull a stunt in order to prove he's still the same ODB. He never denied the treacherous lifestyle he led. There was no shame, and that neglect amplified his persona within his music and throughout the limelight.

It's unfortunate many people recognize him for his lunacy and not his accomplishments that seemed to lye beneath them. Whether you appreciated ODB or not, he left a legacy that embellished rap fervor unlike many do. What other rapper would name themself after such a degrading alias and hold true to it with such raw accounts of street life? He left harsh bits of his strenuous life wherever he went, regardless of the affects. For that, he is eternalized. His words will never die.

It's been over a week since my last post and within that time frame America has changed and succeeded in an amazing feat that i certainly never thought attainable in this country. America elected its Obama as the next president. This amazing feat has been made so real as a result of the American people joining together in strength, numbers and hope to accomplish a task that has never seemed possible until recently.

To me, America has seemingly overcome a massive prejudice that has dictated and governed American rules and regulations for decades. To elect a president of color is a mighty feat that i am truly grateful for, and find it overwhelming to be a contributor of such an act.

To be honest, I am actually a bit patriotic about the entire process, and to admit that is not normal for me. I have never been one to wave flags, take my hat off during the national anthem, or give praise to this country. I have been one to cheer for freedom of speech, seek information by way of press and report it, dabble with various religious beliefs, and praise the idea of a free society. Yet, the pride i feel now is different. It's deeper, genuine. Something took place to me this last tuesday the 4th, and not only did it seem to take place just to me.

I happened to watch the election process unfold with about 10,000 other people in the PDX Convention Center, shoulder to shoulder, grin to grin, tears to tears, roars to roars, and an overwhelming joy the tremored from wall to wall within the giant ballroom where we all faced forward to watch the mega screens display state by state polls, and soon enough display Obama's election speech live from Chicago.

Within this commraderie, i managed to latch onto some sort of unique, unbiased patriotism that i have not felt before. To witness such a major change demonstrated by millions of Americans, young and old, to be apart of such a historical moment in time, resonated through me while i stood there facing the screen with so many others.
A feeling of true gratitude for America crept up my spine and peered through my eyes.

I felt overwhelmed with a joy and a re-installation of hope for the country that i once honestly hated with spite (many of you know this). To witness Obama give his speech was like witnessing a ray of hope and change within the American people. Not only did Obama pass on hope, but each person seemed to pass on hope to each other. In unity we achieved the impossible, as a country we achieved what nobody believed could be achieved. We passed hope along the highways of America and reached up with our arms saying "yes we can". We the people did it!

The idea that i'm actually happy to be an American is one that i've fled from for years in anger and bitterness. Today i look to America with optimism, even though there is so much to be done, i still look forward with optimism instead of cynicism. A true change of thinking has taken place in the minds of so many Americans, and with that comes a road full of many obstacles, but a road paved with strength and faith, a road that enables millions to come together side by side to take their country back and re-instill values that have been lost for too long. I see hope in the eyes of many people now, and that's a genuine theme that seems to be clearly emerging day after day. My eyes are open and i feel authentically blessed to live in America for once in my life.

Teenage killer jailed for five years
A teenager who stabbed a student to death in an unprovoked attack has been jailed for five years.

Christopher Johnston, 17, was stabbed in the leg moments after his best friend had been attacked by the same 14-year-old youth.

The killer was drunk at the time and had left his home armed with a knife.

Lord Matthews, at the High Court in Edinburgh, told the youth that the use of knives had caused "countless families to mourn over the years".

He added: "Nothing the courts have been able to do has brought any of the victims back nor, I suppose, provided any form of solace for those left behind."

The judge said the killer, who is now 15 and cannot be named for legal reasons, was very young and had "a number of difficulties not of his own making".

He ordered that he should be detained for five years and kept under supervision for a further five years when he is released.

The judge expressed his admiration for the family of the victim after reading reports that Christopher's father Jim Johnston, 51, said he did not hate his son's killer but hated what he had done.

Lord Matthews said it was a "tragic and unusual case" and the death was the unforeseen consequence of a stab wound to the victim's leg.

Outside the court Mr Johnston said the sentence was "at the very lowest end of the scale".

He added: "Christopher would have been 18 next week. This boy will be released on, or about, his 18th birthday. He will be able to celebrate his 18th birthday. We will be sitting a week on Sunday without Christopher."

The victim's aunt, Anne Marie McGuire, said: "His future is in his own hands. He has robbed us of Christopher and he has robbed Christopher of his future."

The youth, who has attention deficit disorder, was originally charged with murdering Christopher at a lane near Pentland Drive, Bishopbriggs, Glasgow, on January 26 this year.

But during an earlier trial the Crown accepted his guilty plea to a reduced charge of culpable homicide.

He admitted assaulting Christopher near his home, pushing him against a fence, holding a knife to his throat and stabbing and killing him. His parents found him dying in the street.

The Glasgow College of Commerce student was taken to hospital but died an hour later after suffering massive blood loss.

The killer, who claimed he had drunk eight pints and two vodkas in a pub, was caught in a nearby street with a bloodstained knife in his sleeve.

He also admitted assaulting Christopher's friend, 17-year-old Keni Carmichael.

Neil Murray QC, defending, said his client had problems articulating his feelings and that led to frustration and a loss of temper.

He added: "I can provide no explanation for what happened. Drink may provide an explanation and the boy's background may provide an explanation, but neither of these factors is given as an excuse for what happened."

Mr Murray said the youth, from Bishopbriggs, had expressed regret for his actions.

Lord Matthews called for an investigation into claims that the teenager was allowed to drink in licensed premises.
